Grocock and South began trading in 1968, carrying out small domestic and estate maintenance works. Originally set up by Michael South and Martin Grocock, the partners saw a gap in the market for residential new build contractors. Their first clients included names such as McLean Homes, Anyons, and Wentworth Estates. The office premises were located originally in a downstairs flat in Blyth, and stock stored in a timber shed at Hodsock Priory. The two partners soon began to enlist the help of trainees and fully qualified electricians to cope with the increasing workload demands.
The business went from strength to strength and new clients included national house builders and the partners turned over their first million pounds in 1995. A year later Mick's son Richard whilst still at University joined the business in a financial capacity. He began to run the business over the forthcoming years eventually leading to both partners retiring from the business in 2000. Richard completed a management buyout and in 2003 incorporated the business as South Electrical.
South Electrical Limited today is turning over in excess of four million pounds, employing nealy 100 people, covering a minimum of 70 building projects. Current customers include major national house builders, local regional developers, as well as custom builders and private individuals. Whilst business to business relationships make up the vast majority of the company's turnover, the firm recognises the needs of local residents.
